May is for Miracles at Costco as they raise funds for UC Davis Children’s Hospital

Costco stores throughout Northern California are selling the iconic Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) paper “Miracle Balloons” to raise money for UC Davis Children’s Hospital as part of the Miracle Month of May. 2017 marks 30 years of Costco stores supporting CMN Hospitals. Since 1988, Costco has helped raise more than $240 million which have gone to help fund programs, research, equipment and patient care for CMN Hospitals nationwide.

Costco raised more than $1.1 million for UC Davis Children’s Hospital in 2016 from donations made last May. This money is most often raised one dollar at a time, with Costco employees asking customers for donations.

To spread the love and gratitude, Children’s Miracle Network at UC Davis is asking all UC Davis Health and UC Davis employees to thank cashiers for their support when they are shopping at Costco in May.

“It’s truly an honor to work side by side with our Costco miracle workers! For 30 years, Costco continues to raise the bar and build a culture of giving throughout their buildings and in our communities, while improving and saving lives with each balloon sold. Costco is a proud partner of our CMN hospital, UC Davis Children’s Hospital,” said Jacquelyn Mills, director of development at Children’s Miracle Network at UC Davis.

The Costco warehouse in Chico received national recognition in 2016 by raising $132,731, one of the largest amounts raised by a Costco location nationally, and hopes to do so again.

“The children and their precious families are our reason why we fundraise, and we focus on that during this month,” said Jonathan Carter, Costco store manager in Chico. “We believe that if you get passionate, motivated people behind a clear vision, you get results.”

UC Davis Children’s Hospital receives all money raised by 17 local Costco warehouse locations and four Costco depots.

Costco depot locations have been heavily involved in fundraising during the month of May each year, which can be difficult since these locations do not have the benefit of customer traffic to support their fundraising efforts. Still, many have found a formula for success. In 2016, the Costco depot in Tracy raised $84, 965 a feat that was made possible through donations from outside carriers, employee giving and an annual employee golf tournament.
